Nathan's is an Irish-owned dog food brand built on more than 30 years of experience with pet nutrition — and a simple belief that good food is about quality ingredients, thoughtful nutrition and getting the balance right.
It didn't start with Nathan's.
Our story with dog food began more than 30 years ago. Working with pet food every day meant comparing recipes, studying ingredients, listening to dog owners and, most importantly, feeding our own dogs.
We knew what we wanted from the food we were prepared to stand behind: good-quality animal protein, carefully chosen ingredients, no reliance on cheap cereal fillers and nutrition that made sense for everyday feeding.
When one of the foods we trusted disappeared from the market, rather than simply replace it with something we weren't as happy with, we created our own. That became our original Super Premium range more than 20 years ago and, for many years, it was exactly the kind of food we wanted to put in our dogs' bowls.
But dog nutrition didn't stand still. Neither did we.
A new generation of dog food.
As ingredients, nutritional knowledge and production technology developed, we began looking at what the next generation of our food should be.
We wanted quality animal protein, higher meat content, grain-free recipes, purposeful ingredients and great palatability. But we didn't want to chase extremes simply because they made impressive numbers on the front of a bag.
We wanted balance.
And this new range deserved an identity of its own. There was just one problem: after far too long trying different names, we still couldn't decide what to call it.
Then the answer became rather obvious. At home, there was a new arrival. Brendan's son, Nathan, had just been born.
Nathan's was born too.
More than ten years later, his name is still on every bag.
Better doesn't always mean more.
There's no shortage of numbers in dog food. More meat. More protein. More ingredients. Bigger percentages.
We don't believe the highest number automatically makes the best everyday food. We believe in getting the balance right: meaningful levels of quality animal protein, carefully selected ingredients, complete nutrition and recipes designed around the needs of different dogs and different stages of their lives.
What's right for a small adult dog isn't necessarily what's right for a growing large-breed puppy. And sometimes a dog needs more targeted nutritional support. That's why Nathan's has evolved from our Grain Free recipes into a broader family of foods, including our specialist Veterinary Range.

Nutrition can look impressive on paper. For us, there's another test that matters just as much: would we happily feed it to our own dogs every day?
Max
Max was part of the family long before Nathan's appeared. He ate our original Super Premium food before becoming one of the first of our own dogs to move onto Nathan's when the range launched.
He remained a much-loved member of the family until the remarkable age of around 19.
Ted
At five years old, Ted currently eats Nathan's Small Bite Duck & Orange — a grain-free recipe with a smaller kibble well suited to smaller dogs.
Ted and Ross couldn't be much more different, which rather proves the point: one food doesn't have to fit every dog.
Ross
Ross joined the family in 2025 and is growing up on Nathan's Large Breed Puppy Salmon & Vegetables, a recipe designed around the nutritional needs of growing large-breed puppies.
As for palatability? Ross appears to have very few complaints.

Nathan's started with more than 20 years of experience already behind it, a new generation of dog food in front of it — and a new baby at home who happened to provide the perfect name.
More than ten years later, the range has grown. The recipes have evolved. Our understanding of dog nutrition continues to develop. And today, there are a whole lot more dogs enjoying Nathan's.
